Bad Backing - 100% Backache Guaranteed!

It’s common to just chuck everything you "think" you need for a holiday in to the biggest bags you can find. And if you think backpacking is merely lunging around huge body sized killer backpacks when you travel, you’re wrong!

Travelers who travel around with huge backpacks are not necessarily backpackers, just lazy packers!

Here is why you need to pack light on any trip!

  1. Its NOT FUN! Having to lunge around a 20 kg backpack with another 5kg in front.
  2. It saves money! Light weight means no overweight charges on flights, no need for storage and porter services and you can easily fit everything into a bus or a taxi.
  3. Its safer! Less bags means less things to take care of, and less chances of losing it.
  4. Its mobile! Less/light bags allow you to move around further without tiring yourself. Very practical, when first arriving and when you are wandering around looking for a place to stay.
  5. It gives you peace of mind. In case you went on a shopping spree, you need not worry, as you would still have extra weight allowance on the flight.

Try Packing Light

The type of bag you use is essential. Make sure you are using a sturdy, light weight bag when travelling.

Sometimes the bag alone is already 8kg (which doesn’t leave you much, to carry, as most budget airlines standard limit is 15kg). So make sure you weight your empty bags first. To see if the bag is strong, I used to know a friend, who jumped and started pulling on the shoulder straps with both hands just to check if it rips. It sounds logical, as you wouldn’t want to end up with snapped straps half way through the journey.

Come up with a standard check list that you will use over and over again. This list should include the bare necessities you need for each trip. E.g. Passport, clothes, shoes, toiletries, travel adapter etc. This check list ensures that you only pack the essential items for the trip, and also make sure you don’t forget anything.

Roll your clothes up. This enables you to fit more clothes into the bag, and ensure they are not crumpled. This saves space compared to the conventional folding of clothes. Size down your toiletries, by putting them into smaller bottles (Liquid and solids are the heaviest to carry). This includes shower gels, shampoos and toothpaste. Get the combos! Nowadays there is the hair shampoo and conditioner together in one tube. This saves plenty of space, instead of having to bring a bottle of each.
